Judaism. a parchment scroll inserted in a small tube or box, usually of wood or metal, and attached by Orthodox Jews to the right-hand doorposts of their homes, in obedience to the Biblical injunction in Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21, both passages being inscribed on one side of the parchment.
